The Big Leap will not be returning for a second season with Fox. The freshman run of the ballet-drama-comedy, starring Scott Foley and Simone Recasner, ended in December, with the network deferring a decision on the show’s future until the spring at the time of its debut.
In addition to Our Kind Of People, which has a strong showing on Fox’s streaming service Tubi, there are two Fox freshman dramas on the verge of being renewed after a soft limited run.
At Fox, The Big Leap was a favorite of executives during the development process because of its music, stage performances and aspirational themes, which drew comparisons to Glee.
Scorecard of Shows That Have Been Cancelled or Renewed for the 2021-22 Season
Glee’s ratings did not match those of The Big Leap. It was Fox’s lowest-rated show of the season in terms of linear ratings, with the dramedy coming in at number two.
The Big Leap, which received a rare for a broadcast series 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, was still liked by Fox executives. Season 2 of The Big Leap had to be pitched to the network before the final decision could be made.
Viewers of The Big Leap were taken on a journey of self-acceptance, body positivity, and self-empowerment at any age through the show’s show-within-a-show format. “It’s a modern-day tale of second chances, pursuing your dreams, and reclaiming what’s rightfully yours.” Throughout the series, various people are down on their luck trying to turn things around by taking part in a potentially life-ending reality dance competition that culminates in a live performance of Swan Lake.
20th Television and Fox Entertainment collaborated on the production of The Big Leap. Inspired by the British reality show Big Ballet, Liz Heldens created her show. She served as the show’s executive producer alongside director Jason Winer and Annapurna TV’s Sue Naegle.

Season One Ratings
The Big Leap’s first season had an 18-49 rating of 0.24 and a live+same day rating of 1.27 million viewers (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). Even though these figures do not take into account additional delayed or streaming viewing, they are an excellent indicator of how well a show is performing, particularly when compared to others on the same channel.
