Diablo 4: Everything We Know So Far (2022)

Some readers may find our wide-ranging discussion of Diablo 4 to be overwhelming. Use the table below to skip to the specifics if you know exactly what you’re looking for.

Diablo 4 Release Date

Okay, let’s start with the most common inquiry. Although a late 2022 release date for Diablo 4 had been anticipated, this is now clearly not going to occur. Blizzard Entertainment, a studio owned by Microsoft, has announced that the release date for Diablo 4 will be in 2023. Regrettably, at this time, we are unable to provide a more accurate release date.

Mark this page and check back for updates; we’ll add new content as soon as it becomes available.

Diablo 4 Platforms and Crossplay

Diablo 4 will debut in 2023 on the PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and current-gen consoles (PS4 and Xbox One). To fill in the blanks, Microsoft has acquired Blizzard. Consequently, it’s reasonable to assume that the game will be an Xbox One exclusive. The good news is that won’t be the case with Diablo 4, as it will be available on multiple platforms at launch. PC gamers will also appreciate the inclusion of controller support in Diablo 4.

Diablo 4 will feature cross-platform play and cross-progression, as was announced during the recent Xbox and Bethesda showcase. However, please be aware that a Battle.Net account is necessary.

Diablo 4 Beta Test: Sign Up Process

Gamers eagerly await the release of a Diablo 4 beta for use in raiding. Unbeknownst to them, in July, some fans discovered the Diablo IV beta on the Battle.Net launcher. On the other hand, Diablo’s general manager Rod Fergusson has stated that the beta was an internal test only. As a result, there is no active Diablo 4 beta or alpha testing at this time.

It’s possible, though, that a public beta will be released as the game’s release date approaches. Visit Diablo’s website to sign up for beta release updates and be among the first to try the game.

Diablo 4 Storyline: What Is the Game About?

Let me quickly recap the plot of Diablo 3 for those of you who may have forgotten it. In Diablo, the Eternal Conflict between the forces of the High Heavens and the Burning Hells is always raging. You play as the hero who travels to the Sanctuary, the game’s version of the mortal world.

Your mission as the protagonist is to use your family history to thwart Diablo’s evil plots to rule the world. If you need help getting somewhere, you frequently ask the angels for guidance. However, the stories, heroes, and villains of each Diablo installment are unique from one another.

Set several years after the events of Diablo 3, the game’s namesake antagonist is expected to make a return. When Malthael, the Angel of Destruction, destroyed nearly the entire Sanctuary in the previous installation, he also closed the Gates of Heaven. Do you recall my mentioning the Great Beyond?

Well, the Heavens are to thank for the freedom with which Lilith, daughter of Lord of Hatred, now walks. The cinematic trailer for Diablo 4 released in 2019 suggests that Lilith will play a major role in the game’s plot as the antagonist, seeking vengeance against those who have wronged her. On the other hand, this could mean that Lilith replaces Diablo as the game’s primary antagonist.

Five Regions

In Diablo 4, the world of Sanctuary will grow by a total of five new, sizable regions. Each region will feature unique complexities, the game says, rather than just being a carbon copy of the others. Therefore, players are at liberty to explore these six areas and all of the corridors, shortcuts, traps, and other obstacles they come across. The developers of Diablo 4 have thankfully provided some gameplay footage from these areas by uploading a series of videos showing off the game in action. You can follow the provided links to view examples of their work.

Diablo 4’s story is currently unknown, but with Lilith’s return and increased screen time, we can expect plenty of action and drama.

Diablo 4 Campaign Length

Diablo 4 director Joe Shely confirmed in an interview with Gamespot that the game’s story mode will last for 35 hours. “Just bursting with story and characters that are human and you can connect with on an emotional level,” Shely says of the campaign. We’ve put in a lot of time and effort into Diablo 4’s campaign, and we’re excited about where it’s going.

Diablo 4 New Classes and Abilities

Through their monthly dev diaries, Blizzard has already provided a wealth of information regarding the Diablo 4 classes. Different classes allow you to tailor your campaign to your preferred play style and specific needs. You’ll be able to choose between the following Diablo 4 character classes:

Barbarian

Large, powerful, and well-armed fighters who are known for their brutality.
Aside from his other abilities, the barbarian can send out a wave of energy that deals damage to other foes. Once Diablo 4 is released, the Barbarian class will be the best option for players who like to dive headfirst into combat.

Sorceress: If you find yourself to be more of a tactician, then perhaps the Sorceress class is better for you.

Diablo 4 sorceress
Being a ranged unit, the sorceress attacks enemies from a distance using elements like lightning, ice, and fire. Furthermore, sorcerers will even be able to enchant skills, thereby, gaining passive abilities.

Druid: The Druid class has returned from Diablo 2 with their shapeshifting abilities.

Druid Diablo 4

Druids are adept at channeling the energies of the air and the ground to assume animal forms such as wolves and bears. This Diablo 4 class is also coming back with new magic abilities and a new design.

The Rogue class has been brought back from the days of the original Diablo game. The Diablo Rogue in the first game used a bow, but in the new game, players will have access to a wider variety of weapons.

rogue diablo 4

Members of the Rogue class will have access to a wide array of abilities and weapons, including shadow magic, traps, and traditional melee weapons like swords, daggers, and bows. As in the original Diablo 2, the Rogue class can be used for a stealthy assassination.

The Necromancer is the final playable class in Diablo 4 and has been since the game’s inception.

Diablo 4 Necromancer

Necromancers have the incredible ability to raise the dead (or at least their skeletons), allowing them to use their skeletal allies as additional swords in combat. Add some unholy dark magic on top of that, and you have a winning combination.

Diablo 4 will also feature a deep system for personalizing the main character’s appearance, in addition to these intriguing and returning classes. Moreover, you will have the ability to alter their physical appearance, a first for a Diablo game.

What is the Gameplay Like in Diablo 4?

Diablo is an open-world, hack-and-slash action role-playing game. Similarly, Diablo 4 will have players traverse an open world and visit different cities. These aforementioned areas will be dispersed throughout the map so that players can get a good look at the whole thing. Therefore, you will be free to travel anywhere in the world. These areas will also feature a dynamic weather system and day/night cycles to increase the visual variety and difficulty.

Because of its nature as a dungeon crawler, Diablo 4 will also include dozens upon dozens of randomly generated dungeons. Furthermore, these dungeons contain legendary items, which can be obtained by players who are willing to take a risk and explore them. In the clip above, you can see a bit of the action.

Diablo 4 will have a branching plot that adds to the open world’s variety. This means that there is no strict order in which you must complete the campaign’s quests.

So start the game and progress through the various quests available. Diablo 4 will not have Fallout-style branching dialogue options, though.

New Skill System

Because of player feedback, Blizzard reworked Diablo 3’s skill system to make it more intuitive in Diablo 4. The upcoming proficiency system will take the form of a tree. The skill and passive nodes on this tree will now be completely distinct from one another. In the upper part, players can invest their points. In this skills tree, players can collect various nodes to create their ideal playstyle and combination. More generic enhancements to your character can be found in the passives tab.

To be clear, the new skill tree in Diablo 4 will not allow you to unlock all of the skills. The team is “currently aiming for 30-40% of the nodes filled in for end game, so that players can have very distinct, and different ways they build out their character,” according to the September 2020 quarterly update.

New Monster Families

Monster families in Diablo 3 included demons, unholy, and undead; in Diablo 4, there will be even more. The fighting methods and sense of identity of each family are unique.

Each family has its own unique set of archetypes that will serve a unique purpose in battle. To put it plainly, each family will employ its unique method of conflict resolution. Creating monster families served to give Diablo 4’s world a unique feel in comparison to its predecessors. The goal of this complicated system is to make the creatures feel intellectually and physically superior.

In an update from February of 2020, two years ago, Blizzard mentioned one such monster family. These monstrosities possibly descended from a tribe of barbarians, are known for their insatiable appetites and extreme cruelty, earning them the apt name The Cannibals. Each of the four monsters in this gang will have its unique weapons and physical traits. The cannibals are unable to use ranged attacks due to the nature of their race, but they will still rush and leap at the player if they can.

Item/ Weapon Changes

Blizzard revealed more information about Diablo 4’s itemization and upcoming changes during the December 2021 Quarterly update. The developers have considered every facet of itemization, which is the central idea behind their reasoning. They’ll be able to offer a level of weapon customization between that Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 as a result.

You’ll be able to make better use of your weapons thanks to the new, more nuanced attributes they’ll have, such as a weapon speed factor. As with weapons, shields will now have the ability to block. The addition of these traits will facilitate the selection of items that players believe will best serve their build.

When it comes to loot, Blizzard has put in extra effort to prevent dungeon explorers from solely seeking out legendary items. As a result, they’re working to boost the effectiveness of affixes on Magic items. Affixes on Rare and better items can now have up to three times as many as they used to. Unique items will now replace Mythics, and Legendary items’ legendary affixes will be rolled randomly.

And if there’s a particular legendary ability you’re after, you can usually find it in more than one slot. If you find some sort of power on an object you’d rather not have, you can use the new Occultist to move that power or Essence to something else.

It’s important to remember that once power is transferred, the original item will be destroyed. When it comes to merchandise, vintage options are being phased out. Players can now craft their very own legendary items simply by using a consumable that allows them to apply a legendary affix to regular items.

New Stats

Diablo 4 will also come with three new stats, which will all have their effect, and you will also be able to use them before item affixes. The three new stats in Diablo 4 are:

  • Ancestral Power: Increases the chance of on-hit effects
  • Angelic Power: Increases duration of all positive effects
  • Demonic Power: Increases the duration of all negative effects

Diablo 4 Endgame Is Different

In Diablo 4, we’re bringing back the Paragon board, but with some upgrades. To those unfamiliar with Diablo, the Paragon Board is a special area reserved for the game’s highest-leveled players. After completing the board, players will have access to a variety of helpful build customization options and post-game bonuses.

After reaching level 50 in Diablo 4, players will gain access to the game’s new Paragon Board. In the middle of the table is where you should start. Paragon tiles, which can range from common to legendary, are added to the board as victories are recorded.

To strengthen your character, you must collect paragon tiles. However, remember that you can only open tiles that are linked to your existing tiles.

Unlocking the paragon board will continue until you get to the very last square. Once this is done, however, the board can be linked to others like it across the paragon network, each of which will feature its own unique set of tiles. Different tiles, some of which may be upgrades, will be available to them depending on the design of their layout. We don’t know if there will be a hard cap on the number of boards, allowing for infinite variation, or if the number of boards will be fixed.

The forthcoming Paragon board system is intriguing, and it promises to provide yet another avenue for increasing your hero’s level.

Diablo 4 PvP and Online Modes

Many players were frustrated that player versus player (PvP) wasn’t included in Diablo 3 upon its release. Blizzard has announced that player versus player combat will return in the next installment of the Diablo series. However, if you’d rather not deal with interruptions, PvP won’t be a required mechanic. You need not be concerned, as PvP has no bearing on the overarching storyline.

Fields of Hatred are the name given to the player versus player areas in Diablo 4’s world. Players have the option of venturing into these areas to amass Hatred Shards, a form of in-game currency. These shards are obtained by killing monsters and other players. You’ll need to clean these fragments up before you can put them to any practical use, though. Once you begin the cleansing process, you become an easy target for the other players. If you are successful, you can use the shards to purchase unique items like horses, weapons, and costumes.

We’ve established that player-versus-player combat is entirely voluntary, so there’s no pressure to engage in skirmishes with other players. Note, however, that Diablo 4 requires a constant internet connection to play. This is by no means a bad thing, but it does mean that you will be part of a community. This includes interacting with other players in open-world settings and holding global events that players from all over the world can join in on.

Even though Diablo 4 doesn’t have an offline mode, couch co-op fans will be pleased to hear about it. This was confirmed in the Quarter 2 2020 update for Diablo 4.

Is Diablo 4 Pay to Win?

Don’t worry that you’ll end up with yet another game that requires you to pay to progress. Diablo 4 will not be a pay-to-win game, as stated by Blizzard. To learn more about this, please read on.

Will Diablo 4 Have Microtransactions?

A survey in German was recently posted to Reddit by an anonymous user. Users were asked to select their preferred version of Diablo 4 from three options, but the Reddit account was quickly deleted. The point of this survey was probably to hint that Diablo 4 would have microtransactions. However, Blizzard has responded after days of fans worrying over questions and negative comments directed at the developer.

Diablo’s Global Community Lead Adam Fletcher has stated that while the game will feature microtransactions, the paid content will primarily focus on cosmetics and eventually full expansions.

In the most recent August Quarterly update for Diablo 4, Kegan Clark, director of product for Diablo IV, confirmed the same thing. Clark also provides a thorough breakdown of Diablo 4’s upcoming Season Pass and Shop.

The game’s season pass is based on a live service model in which players receive regular updates to the game, including new content, quests, challenges, and other improvements over the year. There will be both free and paid tiers of the season pass that award players with different benefits as they advance through the game. Clark confirmed that the premium tier season pass is required, but that it grants no additional abilities or advantages in the game.

As with the recently released Diablo Immoral mobile game, the Diablo 4 store expands upon the wide selection of cosmetics already available to players. You’ll be able to buy a wide variety of different looks for your character, and each part is fully customizable from the in-game store.

Kegan reaffirmed that the cosmetic wares for sale in the store add absolutely no functional value to the game. In addition, Blizzard has made sure that hundreds of transmogs can be obtained from in-game drops without the game’s shop, so players of Diablo 4 won’t feel obligated to make any purchases.

So while microtransactions will be available in Diablo 4, they will all be purely cosmetic and provide no benefit beyond, say, a slightly better-looking set of armor.

Diablo 4 Price: Will the Game Be Free?

Diablo 4 will cost full price and will be a one-time purchase. As you can see from the prior section, Blizzard has confirmed the same thing. There has been no official word on pricing from the creators. Since Diablo III was released in 2012 for $60, we can assume that the brand-new Diablo IV, which is currently in development, will cost as much as other AAA games when it finally launches in 2022 or 2023. In other words, when Diablo 4 launches next year, it could have a price tag of $60 to $80.

As no in-game microtransactions are affecting your progress, you won’t have to spend extra money on the game beyond the purchase of purely cosmetic items. Since we do not yet have information on the game’s price, please check back at a later time for updates.

Gear Up for Diablo 4 Game Release in 2023

I hope this comprehensive guide to Diablo 4 has answered all of your questions. You can see for yourself that this new game will add a lot to the Diablo universe. We can expect things to heat up once Lilith returns to Sanctuary. More potential new players in 2023 should try this game out because it does not include microtransactions or pay-to-win features. There shouldn’t be any noticeable difference despite Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision, but only time will tell. I’m curious as to your thoughts on Diablo 4.
